Therapy Approaches

Canine Therapy

Canine therapy is a form of animal-assisted therapy that utilizes dogs as therapeutic animals. The presence of the animal can help a person to relax and become more open with their therapist. It may also incite them to speak freely of their experiences while examining their emotional and mental states more thoroughly. Dr. Sigmund Freud and Dr. Charles Mayo both used dogs in their practice.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful cognitive distortions and behaviors, improving emotional regulation, and the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems.

Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness practices helps you relax the body and mind to reduce stress. It usually involves meditation, breathing techniques, guided imagery, and similar activities to restructure your attitude and increase your awareness so you can better manage your thoughts and emotions.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that enables people to heal from symptoms and emotional distress that result from disturbing life experiences. Studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.

"Whether an illness affects your heart, your arm or your brain, it's still an illness, and there shouldn't be any distinction. We would never tell someone with a broken leg that they should stop wallowing and get it together.  We don't consider taking medication for an ear infection something to be ashamed of. We shouldn't treat mental health conditions any differently. Instead, we should make it clear that getting help isn't a sign of weakness - it's a sign of strength- and we should ensure that people can get the treatment they need."
